Geesh... What A Day!
Mom had an appointment at Ochsner early this morning to consult about a colonoscopy. It had been put off for some time until her heart doctor gave the "okay" for it, which he did a couple weeks ago. The past few days, she's been seeing more blood in her stool than usual, so the surgery doctor she saw today scheduled the colonoscopy for this coming Monday morning. He told her to buy an over-the-counter laxative to clean herself out with before Monday. He then sent her to the lab for blood work, then radiology for a chest x-ray, then pre-admission testing on the second floor of the hospital.
Simce he wants her on a mainly liquid diet Saturday and Sunday, we stopped by Super 1 Foods to pick up some Glucerna/Ensure/Gatorade/broth, along with some Jello cups. We also looked for the medicine the doctor wanted her to get, magnesium citrate. They didn't have it. We thought "No problem", since we also needed to stop by Walgreen's to pick up her Eliquis refill, we'll see if they have it there. Didn't see it on the shelf, so I asked the pharmacist about it as I was paying for the prescription refill. He said that medicine was discontinued a little over TWO YEARS ago.
Soooo... mom and I go BACK over to Ochsner, since the doctor wanted her to start the laxative early tomorrow morning. Took a while, but another doctor from surgery called in a prescription for a different medicine to mom's pharmacy. So then I drive BACK to West Monroe Walgreen's and we pick it up. Finally we head home. By then it was nearly 4:00pm, and neither of us had eaten yet!
The first doctor mom saw was a resident at the hospital, and he told us that a different doctor would be doing the colonoscopy, since today was the last day of his residency. Pardon me though, but shouldn't a doctor KNOW if a medicine still exists or not BEFORE he tells you to buy it or prescribes it?!?
