James Stricklin Without The James Or The Stricklin
The final two episodes of the "James Stricklin Musical Muse Countdown" digitized this evening from the Tape and Record Show Enterprises archives, minus James Stricklin...
"James Stricklin Musical Muse Countdown: Episode 7, Broadcast Wednesday, September 7, 1988 at 7:30pm central. Theme Music: Careless Whisper(Wham!). Hosts: Paul Morrison and Albert Sims. Songs: Nobody's Fool(Kenny Loggins), Don't Worry Be Happy(Bobby McFerrin), If It Isn't Love(New Edition), I'll Always Love You(Taylor Dayne), Fast Car(Tracy Chapman), When It's Love(Van Halen), Monkey(George Michael), Perfect World(Huey Lewis and The News), Simply Irresistible(Robert Palmer), Sweet Child Of Mine(Guns 'n Roses).
James Stricklin Musical Muse Countdown: Episode 8, Broadcast Wednesday, September 14, 1988 at 7:30pm central. Theme Music: Careless Whisper(Wham!). Hosts: Paul Morrison and Albert Sims. Songs: I'll Always Love You(Taylor Dayne), If It Isn't Love(New Edition), When It's Love(Van Halen), Fast Car(Tracy Chapman), Perfect World(Huey Lewis and The News), I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love(Chicago), I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That(Elton John), Simply Irresistible(Robert Palmer), Sweet Child Of Mine(Guns 'n Roses), Monkey(George Michael)."
The above two episodes were the final attempt at bringing back the "James Stricklin Musical Muse Countdown" after another year hiatus. Once again, as with one of the episodes the previous year, James had a "scheduling conflict" and couldn't make it to the studio for the recording, this time for neither of these "comeback" episodes. Being a weekly top ten, the show was extremely "time sensitive" and couldn't be pre-recorded in advance like most other TRSE produced "broadcasts". So, I brought in Paul Morrison to co-host the episodes.
In episode 7, Paul and I discuss James' absence. He suggests I could play the part of James, he could be me, and my mom could be brought in to play the part of Michelle. I had to remind Paul that James and Michelle were no longer a thing by that time. Paul "being Paul" can't get through a show without making a hugely "politically incorrect" remark about something, this time a remark directed at New Edition. Since Paul wasn't ever really a "popular top ten" person, he thought Taylor Dayne was a guy. When I corrected him, he said her name should be "Dayne Taylor" instead. He also says after the song that Taylor Dayne sounded like K. T. Oslin singing a Whitney Houston song. He refers to George Michael as "the wimp from Wham".
In episode 8, Paul does an impersonation of James impersonating W.C. Fields. He also makes mention of James' "Jacob J. Welsh" character. There's also mention of Sgt. Barry Sadler being shot, via CNN. Paul gives his derogatory remark again towards New Edition. Paul mentions, contrary to rumors, Elton John isn't gay, since he was married to a woman at the time (that comment aged "well" since the recording). Paul and I talk throughout the George Michael song, wondering what makes him so "commercial". Paul's answer to the closing "burning question" in the episode was "When in the sh*t is James coming back??".
