Early Morning Accomplishments [Nov. 23rd, 2009|11:12 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Mood | accomplished]

Already this morning, I've washed dishes, went and applied for work three different places, and called to make an appointment for Eastwood for his yearly shots/examination(next Monday 10:30am). Groceries in the house are running low... debating on whether I want to go shopping this afternoon, or wait till tomorrow. The boy stayed up late last night with his game, since school is out for the week... it's after 11am, he's still asleep... probably completely unaware how busy I've been!

Reruns...oh, well... [Oct. 10th, 2009|03:56 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | tired]

Made it home from work early enough today to listen to some of Leo Laporte's "The Tech Guy" radio show, but this weekend, it'll be reruns. The host is away at "TEDx" in Dubai, he thought earlier he'd be able to do the show remotely from there, but this was on his Twitter today...

"Looks like we'll be doing re-runs of the Tech Guy this weekend. It's way too expensive to make an international ISDN call. Sorry!"

Guess it might be a good time to catch up on some DVD viewing instead... don't have to be at work till 11am tomorrow.

Home from work, etc... [Oct. 3rd, 2009|04:15 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | tired]

After getting off work this afternoon, ran by the grocery store to pick up some food stuffs for the boy and I. Before that, however, I zipped across the river to the neighboring city of Monroe to the "Target" store to pick up the Blu-ray release of one of my favorite movies, the 70th Anniversary Remastered Edition of "The Wizard of Oz"...

You may well ask, why not buy it where I work, to get a discount. Well, "Wally World" only has what I call the "bling edition", which includes a book, a wrist watch, and a bunch of other crap I can't see paying for. "Target" on the other hand, has an exclusive Blu-ray set of JUST the discs... no "bling", and it was only $34.99. Worth the drive over there in my opinion.

Since there is no hurry to go to bed early this evening (off tomorrow), I'll be seeing how well the newly remastered Blu-ray compares to the multi-disc DVD set I bought a few years ago. Should be a noticable improvement, since I also have a newer TV now. A lot of the "bonus" material on the Blu set has been carried over from the previous DVD set though, except for the 6-hour documentary "MGM: When The Lion Roars", which I saw first on Turner Classic Movies, but wouldn't mind seeing again... and a movie about L. Frank Baum starring John Ritter called "The Dreamer of Oz", which I have yet to see for the first time.

Feel free to spy if you like...here...or possibly here.

[Current Mood | blah]

I just know the "powers that be" at my job are going to complain about my not being there today, but this afternoon will mark the 72-hour point from that "Summons in Lieu of Arrest" that Andrew was so late in handing over to me the other night, and I really have no choice but to be here in case they come to pick him up. Mom is still in the hospital, so that just leaves me to take care of everything at the moment. No one else I can rely on.

Short Updates [Sep. 23rd, 2009|09:06 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | blah]

My flu is getting a little better, going to try going back to work tomorrow, can't afford to miss much work. Plus, my excuse from the doctor only goes through today. I'm sure upper management will be fussing about my not being there (as they usually do if I get sick), but what do they want me to do... expose EVEYONE in the building to the flu?!?

Mom might be home from the hospital later today. I'm sure her cat "Booger" will be happy to see her. He always misses her when she's gone for any length of time.

Andrew nearly forgot to put his belt on this morning before going to school. The "alternative" school he is going to this year has a very strict dress code. If he had of shown up without his belt, they probably would have called here asking me to either pick him up, or bring his belt.

Off Work Early Again [Sep. 18th, 2009|07:10 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | blah]

Got sent home from work a couple hours after getting there... the excuse was they were trying to cut down on the end of the week payroll, and three people were too many in the dairy. So, I drove over to the mall after leaving work, picked up the new Blu-ray release of "An American Werewolf in London" and the DVD of the "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii" TV special. Also stopped by the little liquor store up the road and picked up some Powerball lottery tickets for tomorrow nights drawing. Needless to say, I'll be in the living room most of the evening in front of the "good" TV, watching the new purchases.

Oh, by the way... funny (bizarre) thing happened to me at the mall. As I was leaving "F.Y.E.", a cute Israeli woman around her mid-20's or so I guess, tried to lure me away somewhere... but that's a different story... film at 11...

Thought of a fourth "fact"... [Sep. 15th, 2009|07:38 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | cranky]

Here's a fourth fact I was reminded of (think it at work a lot), while watching the movie "Religulous" again...

I live in the deep south, where there are supposedly a ton of "religious" people (judging from a freggin' church on nearly every corner)... in other words, "brainwashed masses". They believe everyone should "rest" on Sunday. If that is so, then why is Sunday one of Wal-Mart's busiest days?!? They come into the store in droves, forcing people to have to work on that day. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me!

/probably more of a mass exodus of friends now
//just stating honest opinions
///churches should be taxed... it's "entertainment"... like movies, etc...taxing churches would more than pay for something useful, like national health care!

Frankly, I'm exhausted! [Sep. 12th, 2009|08:20 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | exhausted]

Is there some major holiday somewhere around this weekend or what? Wally World was a lot busier than usual for this time of the year, even though it's usually busy on weekends, but not to the extent it was today! As you may or may not remember, I work in the dairy section. It was all I could do today to keep milk on the shelves and eggs in the bunker. That shit was literally flying out of the store today! By the time I left at 7:30pm this evening, the last few gallons of whole milk we had in the cooler was on the shelves. Predicting we run out before morning. At the start of the day, we had two pallets of whole milk, each pallet containing 54 cases of milk, with 4 gallons per case... to give you some idea how much was sold today.

As for eggs, the popular 18-count size has 10 cartons per case. I put out around 20 cases total during the 8 hours I was there. Nearly that much of the dozen count, which contains 15 cartons per case. We completely sold out of the large 60-count and 30-count cases around 2pm!

Jeannie and Scott were there today also, but whilst I (whilst?!?) was concentrating on the eggs and milk, they were out putting other merchandise on the shelves, such as cheese, sour cream, fruit juices, yogurt, etc... because those products were disappearing fast also. About an hour before I left, management pulled Jeannie from the department to go up front and check, so Scott was alone after I left.

At one point, one of the elderly door greeters was coming back from her break, walked past me at the egg bunker, and asked, "Where are all these people coming from?" I answered, "I don't know where they are coming from, but I know where they can go!" She looked at me like I killed her best friend or something, and scooted back to her post at the front of the store.

On top of all that, it's been pissing rain all day. I normally avoid going anywhere in downpours unless it's absolutely a necessity.

Sooo... I ask again, out of curiosity... Is there some major holiday somewhere around this weekend or what?

[Current Music |Leo Laporte, The Tech Guy on live.twit.tv]

After mainly sitting on my ass for the duration of my vacation, the first day back to work was extremely exhausting!

In other "back to work" news, working with an old friend again for the first time since the mid-late 90's. Jeannie and I used to work together at Booger King, now she's in the dairy section at Wally World! Well, she's actually been at Wally World for quite some time, but being she was working in the garden center (on the other side of the store) until today. She had asked the management to transfer her to the dairy. We immediately fell right back into the kidding of each other like we used to do years ago. Guess history does sometimes "repeat itself"...

[Current Mood | awake]

Can't wait till I get off work tomorrow... will finally have an entire week of rest and relaxation (hopefully), since my first actual "vacation" with my employer will start then! Been there about 2½ years, without any significant time off to "unwind". Will mainly just spend the time doing a whole lot of "nothing", or at least as little as possible! Not sure what hours I'll be working tomorrow, but I hope it's the early shift... not 10am-6pm like today.

Also tomorrow... ugh...hate to say it... turning another year older. Why can't we just stop at an age we like, and stay there?

Andrew rode his 4-wheeler yesterday after school for the first time in months. He said it would shut off every time he stopped. He asked me what would cause that, I told him I don't have a clue, since I know nothing about any kind of engine. Just suggested he call my mom's old boyfriend Larry, who bought the thing for him. He is actually a mechanic, after all.

Busy... Busy... [Aug. 14th, 2009|03:13 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | tired]

It was extremely busy at Wally World today. Now I know it's Friday... I know it's "back to school" time... but geesh! You'd think, since they are having the entire parking lot re-paved (albeit a section at a time), it would be a tad slower. But nooooo... busier than a normal Friday! Even the assistant manager at the morning meeting was surprised by how busy it was.

After the morning meeting, the lady from Personnel asked if anyone wanted to chip in for a pool on the Powerball lottery, which is up to $213 million. I told her I was short on cash till payday, and I'd pass this time. Actually, I had some cash... and being the greedy bastard that I am, stopped by on the way home to put some gas in the truck, AND buy 10 "quick picks" for tomorrow nights drawing! I'm a bit like Daffy Duck, when he and Bugs Bunny stumbled upon the cave full of treasure... "It's MINE...MINE...MINE!!!". That attitude might come back and bite me in the ass later... but I'm "risky" like that!

My son has gotten set up for the new school year. Mom took him for orientation today while I was at work. After that, they went by Wal-Mart (I had already left by that time), and she bought him a Blu-ray he wanted, "The Fast and The Furious"... which I could care less about seeing myself. Still haven't watched the actual "movie" on one of my last purchased Blu-rays yet, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". As habit with me, I usually watch bonus features on any disc first. The other night, I watched ALL the bonus features on that disc, then was too sleepy to watch the movie. Will watch it Monday when I am off work again. The bonus features were a bit over 3 hours total... for an 84 minute movie!

Now... time for a PC reboot... Windows just downloaded updates... needs a reboot to take affect...

[Current Mood | morose]
[Current Music |"Leo Laporte: The Tech Guy" on KFI640.com]

Last year, an employee in the garden center, only in his early 50's, died after going home from work one day. A few weeks ago, Wilbur, my co-worker in the dairy, died of a double aneurysm while behind the wheel, during his vacation(mid-50's). I get to work today, discover that Henry, one of the overnight people greeters, only in his late 50's, died around 7pm last night at his home. I had just seen him yesterday morning when getting to work.

Is Wally World cursed or something? I told another of my co-workers today that we might should start a "dead pool", but knowing my luck, being I work there also, I'd probably be the next to "check out"!

In other news, my end-of-the-month vacation was finally approved... so I'll have the work week of August 22-28th off... not going anywhere (can't afford to), but plan on just using the week to "unwind", maybe do some house cleaning while the kid is in school (I tend to clean better when alone for some reason).

[Current Music |Leo Laporte, The Tech Guy]

Home from work (they have me working my late co-workers shift now, 5am-2pm mostly), doing my usual Sunday afternoon routine... sitting here watching Leo Laporte on TWiT Live, while sipping on a cold drink. Can't wait till tomorrow is over, then my "weekend" starts (off Tuesdays and Wednesdays for now).

Since vacation time finally kicked in for me back in February, I decided I'd better put in for a week off before I forfeit it (if not used within a year, you lose it), so I decided to take the week immediately following my birthday off. Was going to take the week OF my birthday off, but they need three weeks notice, and I was a bit late putting that in, SO, I'll hopefully be off the week of August 22-28, pending management "approval". Didn't take any holidays off, because most of the time, those DO NOT get approved!

Well, enough rambling... back to Leo...

[Current Music |Leo Laporte "The Tech Guy" on KFI]

Just in from work, was in the department by myself until 1pm, the last hour I was working. Sitting here now listening to the rest of Leo Laporte's radio show on KFI, sipping a nice strong drink! Work two more days, then off Tuesday and Wednesday.

Heard a bit more about what happened to Wilbur, the co-worker who died. Heard around the store he had a double aneurysm, no other details yet.

The last two days, the big news here in the West Monroe area has been about some houses built around the levee of the Ouachita River, which, after the high water we had recently, are now teetering on falling INTO the river, because the soil eroded. All I can say is, I have no sympathy whatsoever for those people! They were dumb enough to buy property literally hanging over a fairly large body of water!

Whoever started all this new scheduling shit is full of shit! Once again, I drive to work... time clock says "Rejected, Not Scheduled" when I swipe my badge. I find a manager, who refuses to clock me in, because I'm neither on the computer generated schedule for today, nor "written in" on it, although my department manager told me to be there... but she's not there to confirm that I'm supposed to be there!

As usual, I'm NOT going to sit around waiting till the department manager gets there, so I come on back home. It won't count against me, since I'm not on the computer generated schedule anyway. The department manager is fed up also, she has already told us, as of next week, just follow what the computer spits out... she's tired of trying to fix the schedule, since she gets no cooperation from the assistant manager over our part of the store! Guarantee, there will be shifts where NO ONE is in the dairy on a given shift as a result!

Computer generated work hours for me this coming Saturday = 2pm-6pm! WTF?!? 4 hours?!? Geesh!

Today should be "interesting"... [Jun. 27th, 2009|05:08 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | groggy]

Well, since Wal-Mart has been "cutting hours" like mad, today should be "interesting" to say the least. In the dairy section where I work, the department manager has weekends off, so she won't be there today. Wilbur starts his vacation today, so he won't be there. Tony's last day of his vacation is today, so he won't be there. Phillip is having to take a "leave of absence", because his wife had a surgery that didn't go well, so he won't be there today.

Normally, I'd be on my way to work at the moment, working 5am-2pm, since Wilbur is on vacation, and I'd be working his shift, BUT because they are cutting hours all over the store, I'm on the schedule from 6am-2pm instead. I'm expecting chaos when I get there... apart from the two overnight stockers for the dairy section, who mainly just concentrate on the freight that comes in that night, no one else was there, meaning the cooler will most likely look like it was hit by a category 5 hurricane! Add that to the milk delivery truck arriving early, with around 5 pallets of milk, "hilarity" should ensue!

On top of all that... because of what was described in the opening paragraph, NO ONE is scheduled for what is known as the "closing shift" today(even though the store doesn't "close"), 1pm-10pm, so, after I leave at 2pm, the dairy will essentially be on "auto-pilot" until the overnight guys get there at 10pm. Not good for a Saturday afternoon, because it stays constantly busy during that time. I'm predicting the shelves will be bare of all milk and eggs before 6pm if they don't find someone to restock!

'Course I'm not really too concerned about it myself, apart from the "mess" I'll encounter at 6am tomorrow morning... Wal-Mart gets themselves into these situations, because management knows nothing about "management".

Vacation, all I ever wanted... [May. 30th, 2009|07:45 am]

[Current Mood | okay]

Earlier in the year, on my paycheck stub, I noticed they finally put a weeks worth of vacation time on it. Thing is, apparently if you don't use it within a year, you forfeit it. Now, I already know I wouldn't be able to afford any trips or the such, but it would be nice to just take a week off and just piddle around the house, maybe clean a few rooms that are a bit dusty, and try to catch up on some DVD viewing. They also need to know at least three weeks in advance when you want to take it, and they don't like you to take it around major holidays. Not expecting any out of town relatives or friends to be visiting anytime soon either, so I just need to figure out exactly when I want to take it.

Grrr... [May. 29th, 2009|02:12 pm]

[Current Mood | aggravated]

Worked less than two hours of my shift, and got sent home, along with a guy in the meat section... to "save labor costs". Wilbur said they sent 18 people in the store home early yesterday, besides me. Sorry, but I haven't noticed THAT big of a drop in the amount of traffic in the store! Methinks they are just turning into greedy, money-grubbing bastards!

Since I now have the rest of the day to "blow", I drove over to "Best Buy" to get a copy of the DVD set, "Land of the Lost: The Complete Series", which was just re-released on Tuesday (Universal has it now, was formerly released by Rhino Video, but I didn't buy it then). Used to enjoy the series as a kid in the mid 1970's... had a bit of a youthful crush on Kathy Coleman. Universal released two versions, a limited edition "lunchbox", and a standard set. I elected to get the standard set, it'll fit better on the shelf. I know, however, the video will look a bit "craptastic" on my new HDTV, even upconverted in the Blu-ray player... because most of the 1970's-1980's videotaped TV series look terrible on it, compared to series that were originally shot on film from the same time period. IF it had been released on Blu-ray, I doubt it would help the video quality any.

[Current Mood | annoyed]

Got to work, time clock wouldn't accept my badge. Hunted down a manager. Manager checked the schedule on the wall, which is generated by the computer. I wasn't on it for today, and even though the dairy manager wanted me there for 11am, the assistant manager refused to punch me in. Even if I had found the dairy manager, she unfortunately doesn't have the authority to clock anyone in. Sooo... I just said to myself, "Screw it, I'm just gonna take another day off, go back tomorrow!" I am listed on the schedule tomorrow!

Stopped by the frozen daquari place on the way home, bought a "jumbo" sized Long Island Iced Tea.

Too many "mothers" out the day before "Mother's Day" [May. 9th, 2009|05:42 pm]

[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |"The Gillmore Gang" on TWiT.TV]

WTF is it with rude asshats, or mothers, as I also call them, being out shopping on the day before "Mother's Day"?!?

Asshat 1: A middle aged woman started fussing at me out of the blue when I was restocking the "Blue Bonnet Margarine", saying,in a snitty attitude, "You KNOW you are supposed to move the older product up before putting in the new product!!!" I had already looked at the dates, ALL the Blue Bonnet had the SAME date... we got a shitload of the stuff in a few days ago... it was all from the same batch... bitch!!

Asshat 2: A guy appearing to be in his mid-late 30's walked up to me when I was stocking the cheese wall, and asked, "Could you tell me where the "Albert's Hot Sauce" is?" (YES, there IS such a product, nothing to do with me though). I told him I had no clue, I had never stocked it. He said, "It's normally in the dairy section." I told him I've never seen it in my section of the store. He ranted on, like I should know where everything in the freggin' store is, since I wear a "Wal-Mart shirt". He apparently found it down near the deli, waved it in front of me a bit later, and after he said where he found it, told me AGAIN I should have known where it was! Didn't tell him this, but this is what I felt like telling him... "I'm only really familiar with the area of the store I work in, or maybe the electronics department also. I RARELY see the rest of the store during the day. When I buy a bill of groceries, I mostly shop at "Brookshires", so I don't have to wait forty-forever to get checked out! Now put that in your redneck cap and smoke it...ASSHAT!!"

Yes, I DO mainly grocery shop at Brookshires... better service, quicker check-out time. Just because I work at Wal-Mart doesn't mean I do all my shopping there! Needed some more hairspray today, since it was just one item, stopped by "Fred's" (a small discount store), which is on the way home, got in and out within 10 minutes.

IN OTHER NEWS: Discovered, after getting home from work, Andrew talked my mom into getting him a 40" Sony HDTV LCD for his bedroom today, early (she was going to get him one after the school year was over), since it's confirmed he has passed for the year, and his class only has 4 more days left in the year. He's thrilled about it, currently got his PS3 hooked to it...

When I got home from work earlier, Andrew alerted me that we were out of mustard, and he wanted to make himself a sammich. Sooo... I turned around and drove to the small grocery up the road from the house. Being that store is a bit "spendy", I was hoping to get the store brand mustard, but had to get French's instead... they were sold out of the "cheap" stuff. Bought another loaf of bread also... we were down to half a loaf.

Made a quick trip to the "Rite Aid" store across the river also. I'm off the next two days... had no "strong liquid refreshment"... and can't buy it on THIS side of the river on Sundays. It's only a 6 mile trip over there.

Just ordered "Star Trek: The Original Series-Season 1" on Blu-ray from Amazon. Currently just have a few DVDs and a few VHS tapes of the show that I ordered from Columbia House several years ago. The HD content should blow the picture quality of the previous versions out of the water! Also, can't argue about the price. List is $129.99... Amazon had it on pre-order 50% off at $64.99... with free shipping!

Work should be "interesting" today, glad I'm off! Even with the weekend power outage, and the immense amount of "catching up" that had to be done afterwards, Wal-Mart doesn't want ANYONE to get any overtime. Thus, my department manager, who was called in on her two days off, now has to take today and tomorrow off instead, leaving the dairy department without anyone at all there until 1pm today, when Scott comes in. I'm predicting the milk and egg situation is getting pretty "dire" at the moment as a result!

Andrew got his school pictures the other day. Talk about a "smug mug"!...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY [info]jadededges AND [info]therealamy !!!

In other news, the AT&T tech guy that came out to fix the internets, said someone would be out in a few days to bury the cable he left on the ground. Well, when no one was home, they came out and "buried" it all right... NOT!!! In sections, the cable is clearly visible still! I called, they are supposed to come back out sometime in the next couple of days. An exposed wire can easily get chopped up by the lawn mower...

Oh, found out Wal-Mart HAS a electric back-up system for power outages, but it only runs things for around 4 hours. Power was out a little over 8 hours the other night. A large transformer across the street from the store blew out during the big storm, knocked out power to most of the businesses on Thomas Road... the main throughofare of the city of West Monroe. Spent most of the day today restocking the dairy shelves. Store lost a lot of meat and frozen stuff also as a result.

[Current Mood | sore, sleepy,]

My leg has had a throbbing pain most of the night, keeping me awake, even worse when I stand up. The new meds apparently haven't had a chance to "kick in" I guess. The doctor only wrote my excuse for yesterday, but wrote on the bottom, in sloppy handwriting, "Stay off leg as much as possible 3 days". In my line of work, I CAN'T stay off the leg any length of time.

So, to give the leg a bit more "healing time", I just called the absentee toll-free number, letting them know hours in advance I won't be in today. I'm scheduled off tomorrow and Tuesday. Hoping by then the meds will be taking effect enough by Wednesday for me to return to work. The managers will throw a hissy fit, since they say ANY absence is an "unexcused one", even WITH a doctors excuse, BUT... how the heck are you supposed to pick up stuff, pull pallets, etc... with a leg hurting so bad you have a huge risk of falling down?!? It's happened to me twice in the past couple of days here at home! Besides, this new round of severe pain STARTED Thursday night while doing just that, pulling a pallet off a truck!

[Current Music |Leo Laporte recording TWiT podcasts]

Around a quarter to 6 this morning, Wilbur's (a co-worker) cell phone rings. He answers. Then he says, "I'm in the dairy cooler." Turns out it was his wife asking, "Where ARE you?!?"

He neglected to tell her his days off were changed to Wednesdays and Thursdays... they were previously Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Routine Maintenance, Plus Some...    [Feb. 4th, 2009|09:17 am]

[Current Music |"Handel on the News" on KFI640.com stream]

Just dropped the ol' Ranger off at Pinton Firestone a while ago. Here's a list of stuff I'm getting done/checked out:

1. Oil, air filter, gas filter change. Getting all other fluids checked.
2. Getting a slow leak under the engine checked out. Green liquid, probably coming from radiator.
3. Getting brakes looked at, although the guy there imagines they are most likely okay, since the truck has 84 more miles to go before hitting the 30,000 mile mark.
4. Getting tires looked at, for possible dry rot (they have been on the truck since I bought it in February 1998).
5. Getting the brake light above the cab checked. It hasn't worked in over a month, and truck is due for inspection this month.

Probably looking at a hefty bill for all this. But worth it to extend the life of the vehicle.

I know what you're thinking... 1998?...and only 30,000 miles?!? Yes, I don't "travel" much. Just mainly to the store, work, doctors, etc. And most of those places are within a 15 mile radius or so from my house. Guess you can say I'm kind of like "the little old lady who only drove her car to church on Sundays"...

In other news, "Wally World", with their new craptastic computer generated scheduling (that the managers aren't allowed to change), has me off today, Thursday, AND Friday this week! This will result in my paychecks looking craptastic also. Got my W-2's Saturday, need to get around to doing my taxes soon.

UPDATE: Total "damage" after labor/tax, $813.29. Brakes were still good.
